Because your headlights are mounted on the leading edge of your car, damage to their lenses (the clear, plastic covers that protect the bulb itself) is a common occurrence.
Even a small crack can have a large impact on the effectiveness of your headlights, and can compromise your safety in a number of ways:
- A large crack can refract some of the light leaving the lens, spreading it to the sides instead of straight ahead, which will hinder your ability to see. It also might cause the light to blind oncoming drivers, which can be dangerous.
- If water enters the lens, condensation can form on the inside, making it harder for light to penetrate, which will dim your headlights and make it harder to see.
- Moisture will also shorten the life of the bulb inside, causing it to burn out prematurely. The last thing you want is to have your headlight output cut in half on a rainy night in the middle of nowhere.
- Finally, though extremely rare, moisture inside a headlight can cause the electrical connections to the light bulb to short out, resulting in a fire.
So, you can see that a cracked lens cover needs to be changed right away, both to keep you safe and to keep you from getting a ticket for a headlamp violation.
