Carlson Truck Outfitters Accessories – Step Rails for your Pickup

Have you ever come home with your new truck and wanted the family to go for a ride to show it off, and as they struggle to climb in the realization occurs that if anyone is going to ride with you that you’ll need to add some steps to your truck.

1)    Truck Steps – these are generally the most affordable, and simplest steps. They’re designed to attach to the frame of your truck under a single door, so you can choose to outfit the whole cab with them, or just the doors that your kids enter from.  Installation is simple and straightforward, and the steps are made of stainless steel or aluminum, so they’re relatively impervious to corrosion.

2)    “Nerf” bars – tubes that run the length of the side of your truck, and are actually taken in design from dirt track cars, where they were first installed to protect from “nerfs”, small collisions that could damage the car’s bodywork and impede performance.  In truck/SUV applications, they can protect the rocker panels and doors from dents and dings caused by rocks, and make a handy step for anyone entering the vehicle.

3)    Running Boards – like nerf bars, running boards generally run down the length of the vehicle between the wheel wells.  In a pickup, they don’t only allow for easier entry, but make it easier to reach over the side of the bed for loading and unloading. They’re usually made of steel, with a fiberglass shell that can be painted to match the vehicle.

For help in selecting and installing steps to make it easier to get in and out of your truck, come see us at Carlson Truck Outfitters, 155 Fennell St. in Winnipeg.

Truck Accessory Gift Ideas

Looking for the right gift for the truck-obsessed person on your shopping list? We’ve got a few ideas or you.

There are many ways to accessorize a truck bed with Carlson Truck Outfitters in Winnipeg. Here are just a few.

Bed Covers – Is there any use having a wide spaced truck bed when the cargo can be harmed by weather or worse, cleanly lifted?  Bed covers make the cargo at home by working on its safety while protecting the truck bed from unfriendly external and environmental elements. We, at Carlson Truck Outfitters, deal in different sorts of bed covers such as Tonneaus, retractables, soft toppers, undercover Tonneaus, and backflips.

Bed Caps – Edges of a bed are extremely prone to damage. Once rusting starts here, it can creep up to the whole bed. Our recommendation is to pick up Bed caps which can protect against high level damage.

Cargo Helpers – A number of items can become a cargo handler’s friend in need. Accessories like bed slides, extenders, cargo nets and bards, hitch racks and spare tire wheelers come in handy the most when not expected at all!

To learn more about these accessory options, give us a call at 204 669 5249 or visit our store at 155 Fennell Street.

Keeping It Cool This Summer

With the weather finally turned to the “nice” setting in the dial, we here in Winnipeg know that it’s only a matter of time until the mercury starts climbing, and those of us who have experienced a Prairie heat wave start thinking about our car’s indoor climate.

Unfortunately, most people don’t know that their AC isn’t working until they’re sitting in traffic at 35 degrees Celsius.  Here are some things you can do to make sure your pickup’s ready for summer heat:

1)    Check the Air Conditioning – a functioning AC unit can maintain a temperature inside your vehicle that’s at least 10 degrees cooler than it is outside. If your AC isn’t working, there’s a pretty good chance you have a refrigerant leak.  You can fill the AC with a can from the hardware store or any auto supply shop, but if a leak has caused the problem, you will need to have it fixed, usually by a pro.

2)    Window Tint – one of the best things you can do to increase the comfort level provided by your vehicle is to tint the windows.  Not only will the tint keep the interior cooler, even when the vehicle is unoccupied, but it will reduce the level of harmful UV rays that come into the vehicle, sparing your skin sunburn and extending the life of your upholstery.

3)    Accessories – Not only can good accessories keep your ride looking cool, but they can keep it feeling that way too.  Summer comfort can be enhanced with vent visors, which will allow you to keep the windows cracked no matter what the weather.

Getting the Most Out Of Your Tank

We love our trucks because they are capable, but let’s face it – a pickup truck is not a Prius.  Your truck’s ability to haul a big load of whatever your want, pull a trailer, and slog through mud comes at a cost.  The good news is that there are some things you can do to get better gas mileage.

1)    Drive sensibly. If you avoid sudden acceleration, and anticipate the need to stop at a stop sign or light, and let off the throttle early, this will save fuel and prolong the life of your vehicle’s brakes. A lighter touch on the throttle will add to your fuel mileage.

2)    Buy the right gas. Most trucks are tuned for 87-octane gasoline – good old regular unleaded.  If your truck’s manufacturer specifies regular unleaded, there will be no benefit whatsoever in spending the extra money for premium.

3)    Regular maintenance. Change your oil at the specified intervals, lubricate your trucks’ driveline and suspension components as recommended, and make sure your tire pressure is right.  Look on the inside of the driver’s door, or the owner’s manual, for the proper inflation pressure.

4)    Aerodynamics. If you add any accessories to your truck, make sure they don’t hinder the flow of air over the body.  Many add-ons can actually improve the aerodynamic profile of your truck.

5)    Put your truck on a diet. Don’t carry any weight you don’t have to.  Take those 2x4s and that bag of trash out of the box, and you’ll reap rewards at the pump.  Again, if you’re choosing accessories, look for light weight.

Ordering From Out of Town

At Carlson Truck Outfitters, we love trucks. And we know how frustrating it can be to be unable to find that perfect accessory, the one that says, “This truck is mine.”

If you live in rural Manitoba, you might find that your options for pickup truck accessories are somewhat limited.  We love the traditional “parts and tires” stores too, but they’re selling everything from antifreeze to road salt, and likely don’t have a staff with the same specialized knowledge that a dedicated truck outfitter like Carlson does.

We know we have the best products and the most knowledgeable staff, because truck outfitting is all we do.  Unlike an online store, our staff is made up of real people who are passionate about the products we sell, and the trucks we install them on.

That’s why we do our best to make it easier for truck owners from outside of town to experience the difference a specialty retailer can make in personalizing your truck.  We have Saturday appointments available, and have moved our shop to the south end of the city, making it easier to access from the highway and from communities out that way.

Our website allows you to have a look at the variety of accessories that we sell, keeps you up-to-date with regard to our specials, and puts you in contact with our knowledgeable staff, who are always willing to talk to you about your truck.

Whether you call, email, or just drop in at our new location, – 155 Fennell St. in Winnipeg, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for at Carlson Truck Outfitters.  If you tell us what you need, we’ll do our best to make sure you get it.

Time to Replace Your Headlight Bulbs?

Most of us treat headlight bulbs just like the lamp in the front hall – when the bulb burns out, it’s time to replace it.

Truck headlights from Carlson Truck OutfittersAutomotive lights, however, don’t work like that.  Before an actual burnout occurs, headlight bulbs will begin to wear out, which means that they will produce less light and your night-time visibility will be compromised.

Those of us who live in Manitoba know that not every highway has streetlamps, and there’s plenty of wildlife out there after dark.  In short, we need to be as safe as possible, and seeing well at night requires that our headlights produce not only enough light to see by, but also the right type of light.

Types of Lights
Most vehicles use a standard halogen light bulb – it’s located in a plastic housing, and is easily replaced from the back side.  Newer vehicles might use High Intensity Discharge lights, HID for short.  In some cases, you can use HID bulbs as an upgrade, but you need to ensure that your truck’s wiring can handle the increased current draw.

Not All Bulbs are Equal
Like anything, with automotive lighting you tend to get what you pay for.  High quality, brand name bulbs will be brighter, produce a more even light, and last longer than bargain brands.

In addition to making sure your bulbs are good, you need to check your lenses (dirty, damaged or “fogged” lenses will reduce the total light output of your headlights).  It’s also imperative that you check the aim of your lights – incorrectly aimed lights can reduce visibility and actually create a road hazard by blinding other drivers.

Perfect Stocking Stuffers!

Is there a pickup truck owner on your Christmas list this year?

If there is, we’d suggest a present for both the owner and the truck – we love trucks, and we know how much people appreciate the opportunity to make them better by personalizing them with the best in protective equipment and accessories.

The problem is that you might now know which items in our very wide selection make the perfect holiday gift.

By choosing a gift certificate, you’re saying: “I care about you and your truck, but I know you want to make it your own.”

Discerning truck owners will be delighted that you chose Carlson.  We offer the exclusive “Full Metal Jacket” spray-in polyuria bedliner, the toughest bed protection in the industry.  We’ve also got a full line of the best names in accessories for trucks – floor mats, bed covers, fuel door caps, stainless door handles, step bars, and a ton of other items that will make your favourite pickup owner really happy to choose from.  When it comes to outfitting your pickup truck, there are a lot of personal preferences at play – some people love Euro style tail lights, and others prefer a chromed tail light cover. When you give a gift certificate, you leave the options open.

Another advantage that Carlson Truck Outfitters gift certificates have is the access they give you to our expert staff.  Unlike people who work in big box hardware stores, pickup trucks are all we do, and we feel very passionate about helping our customers make the most of their rides.

So when you’re looking for the right thing to put under the tree of a truck lover, visit us at 1392c Regent Avenue in Winnipeg.  Gift certificates are available in any denomination you choose.

Tailgate Season in Canada – Are You Ready?

While our beloved Blue Bombers may have experienced a pretty dismal season, we can at least console ourselves with the fact that the Grey Cup will be held just down the road in Regina.

If you’re going, or gearing up for next season, you should check out some of the great things Carlson Truck Outfitters has in stock to trick out your truck for your tailgating activities.

We’ve got parking lot must haves – rear seat storage solutions and a wide variety of bed covers that can keep your barbecue and other equipment dry and secure while you’re travelling to and watching the game.  Truck steps and step bars ensure that even the smallest fans among us can get in and out of the truck.

Tailgate parties are like truck shows – plenty of people showing off their pickups.  Carlson has plenty of accessories to choose from, making your truck more than just transportation.  Chrome fuel doors, screen fronts and grill guards, as well as chrome exhaust tips can give your ride just the right touch of flash, and there’s nothing like a hood scoop to let people know that your truck means business.

To keep the interior of your vehicle looking great no matter what you throw at it, we’ve got seat covers and floor mats, including top-of the line Weathertech models that are precision fit to your vehicle.

No matter what your CFL allegiance, the 101st Grey Cup on November 24th is sure to be an exciting game, and Taylor Field is going to be the best place in the country to be.

Enjoy the game folks, it should be a classic.

Plating on your Truck – Protect Your License!

Manitoba is quickly becoming the home of collector license plates. Between a couple iterations of Winnipeg Jets plates, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Goldeyes, along with the fire service and others.

These plates, especially those that become charitable donation drivers (pardon the pun) have become very in demand both by citizens and, unfortunately, those who’d rather acquire by nefarious means.

With more plates coming, we highly recommend investing in a heavier bolt system to ensure they are not ripped from your truck. After spending the money to make your truck stand out and show your loyalty to Winnipeg sports or services, why leave your vehicle at risk?
